Today, the institute which is known as UET Lahore has been serving the nation for the past ninety six years. It is one of the top institutes of Pakistan. Many students have a dream to get admission here. About 46,000 candidates appear in entrance test conducted by UET each year but only 2,200 of them are admitted by UET.
According to QS world university rankings, UET is losing its rank year by year. In 2012 it was on 601+ and now in 2018 it is going to be on 801+. The merit is also falling for the past few years. These are some of the possible reasons behind this:
1. Education System:
Educational system in Pakistan is being more than education. It is considered as a business for a number of people. In Lahore, students and their parents prefers an academy for quality study rather than a school or college. Nearly all the academies a student is just a source of their income and nothing more than this. And really they are not raising a student to compete and serve for the nation but just a machine to work harder not efficiently.
2. The scope of engineering:
Fresh graduates are always claiming that there is no or very limited jobs of engineering in Pakistan. An engineers’ job totally rely on country’s economics and resources which an industry requires like electricity and gas, both are just like conflict of Kashmir.
3. Tough ECAT:
Majority of the candidates, who appear in entrance test conducted this year declare that is was hard to attempt. The average marks this year were 81 out of 400. And the maximum marks were 329. Two to three years back the average marks were 121 and highest were about 350.
4. UET’s sub-campuses:
Besides main campus, there are four other campuses of UET Lahore and fifteen affiliated colleges. More campuses mean more students which means low merit? Every year UET is introducing new bachelor programs and increasing number of seats.
5. The trend of private universities:
The private universities do not demand high merits. Eligibility to get admission in a private university is just 60% marks in intermediate (according to the HEC criteria). Moreover these institutes provide more facilities (like air conditioned class rooms, restaurant like cafeterias) than a government university by which students found it a piece of cake to get admission in these private sectors.
