MEME’S LOUD SCREAMS!

Richard Dawkins. Heard the name? No? How dare you? He is the one to provide us with the name of pleasure called -drum rolls- MEMES. Yes, he is the one to name this phenomenon. To answer the question who started this creative chain of communication is close to impossible. This road between the entertainer and entertained is foggy to see through. It is a work of an individual. Meme is something which is used, edited, altered by many people to their according. Consequently it has gain such important position in social media. Sites like Facebook, twitter, Instagram are full of these entertaining content. Comically, being tagged in a meme by a friend is taken as a compliment. And why wouldn’t it be? It reflects the ‘gherai’ of the friendship.
Bored in office? Scroll through meme. Saw a funny one? Show it to friend. Relatable enough? Tag someone. It is like an emoji. Used more frequently to express emotion than an emoji itself. Meme has now become one of those things that even if we want to avoid (which by the way we don’t) we can’t. Like mummy ka wo inevitable advisory lecture after that piyaar ki jhappi. We know it’s going to follow but we still want that jhappi. Similarly we know we waste our time in meme but hello –snap snap- it’s worth it!
Memes not only is a source of entertainment but also leaving its trails in an oddly impressive ways on the society. Universities seem to start special degree for the evolution of meme. Institutes like UMBC, Northwestern University, and the University of Cambridge. The study of meme is termed as Memeology.  These degree entertain subjects like:
  • Social Ineptitude 201 (offered in UMBC)
  • Technology and Practices of Field Memeologists 143 (offered in UMBC)
  • Introduction to Redditology (northwestern university)
  • The Sociology of Rage Comic (northwestern university)
  • Understanding and Analysis of the Meme Revolution (offered by The University of Cambridge)

Although it all sounds hilarious to a lot of us, memes can come in handy. Questions like what is the employment scope for this degree? Who would want to study which probably holds perishable future? It doesn’t help with a promising tomorrow. Parents concern and much more. Granting this may all be true, it still is a form of art. Now don’t be like ‘ab is mai art kia hai?’ It is not just a text slapped on image or video. Or should I say, it can not only be that.
We must know that this form of interaction can also be used to grab attention of someone for a topic that they may not be interested in; get people to engage in an affair they otherwise would find dull to contribute in but through a fun meme, they feel themselves forming an opinion to share. It can be used for marketing purposes. To enlighten issues like politics, education, medical, humanitarian in an effective way. Advertising and promotions can also be made in inexpensive approaches. Say a little light is needed to encourage people to vote for elections. A witty meme would do the work. Meme takes a few seconds of your time and convey a message. That message particularly now a days is amusement. Merely a pastime and enjoyment. However, in my opinion, if this will be put aside, this odd aim can be achieved to some extent. But to have a study major for this is, well, overwhelming.
As has been noted, meme is more of a source of comical pastime spreading like a virus today. They fly through social media faster than desi mom’s flying chappal does! It makes people laugh, save them from the hell of boredom, make people like me dramatic, deepen the yaariyan, allow two to have a secret conversation about crushes, teachers and that one person they hate in public like yay! We ain’t scared of nobody, man!
