The word “Ragging” invokes visions of horror in the hearts of many students. When newcomers enter a university with all their expectations and dreams, and get ragged by seniors on their very first day, the initial reaction is that of hatred for the institution, with all their dreams and expectations washed over.
Why do seniors engage in ragging anyway? There are many answers to this question but the main cause is this: any student who has once undergone this process of torture and humiliation is bound to do the same with his juniors. Moreover, according to some students, it creates a good interaction between seniors and juniors and makes the juniors confident as well. However, most importantly, seniors do it to have a “feel” of authority— of being senior.
Ragging has some good effects and many adverse ones on the newcomers. First, when someone is ragged he feels insecure about his very stay in the university. It creates a feeling of hate not only for the institute but also for people attached with it. There are even cases of students leaving university due to ragging!
It is not uncommon to find that the perpetrators and fatalities have become the best of friends in course of time. Their friendship is all the more persistent because of the initial feelings of hostility they experienced in their first encounter. It enhances the confidence of students and brings self-awareness among those who are preoccupied with their own epitomes and pursuits, typically called cranks or bookworms. A moderate amount of ragging can make a freshie behave in a good way along with some interaction with seniors. It would abandon his or her eccentricity as well.
Most of the activities, which go under the facade of ragging, are extremely questionable practices and are really heart wrenching for newcomers. It is really bad to defend them by saying that they would iron out the angularities of behavior of freshes and socialize them into the behavior-pattern of majority of the students.
To sum up, the seniors must abandon this practice, and authorities must tackle it with iron hands, while also keeping in mind that they should not harm the future of seniors by going to the point of rusticating them. The best possible solution to minimize ragging, in my opinion, is to conduct exams of senior students when new session starts.
