Smog Hits Punjab

Smog hits Punjab these days, posing serious threats to the health. Basically it is caused due to plenty much of toxic pollutant mixing up with the moisture present in the upper atmosphere. A dense layer of smog has covered all the troposphere which reduce visibility to the ranks. Smog only get clear when it rains or can be reduced with the help of giant showers. Planting trees can also be very helpful in preventing smog formation in the atmosphere.

Smog is not a new phenomenon these days. It was also witnessed in Lahore on November 2, 2016. By that time people were highly suspicious about the sudden change in weather. Environmental protection agency EPA Punjab badly failed to monitor and keeping a close watch on the recent situation of the environment. EPA officials are looking forward to seek help from China to get rid of smog but this will be the short term solution of the problem. They claimed that number of preventive measures, policies and actions had been adopted on their own to overcome the issue. It includes the installation of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations, sealing of the factories causing severe air pollution, numerous events, public gatherings, and awareness campaigns.

So far, accidents caused due to smog claimed dozens of lives and several more injuries in Punjab. Around 70 domestic and international flights were suspended from Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore due to very low visibility and foul weather.

Many citizens of Lahore are angry with the current government of Punjab for the brutal act of killing the nature. In the name of development, government of Punjab is turning beautiful city of Lahore into concrete jungle. According to the recent survey, the city is losing trees by thousands. Orange Line Metro Train Project will cause chopping down of approximately 620 grown up trees on its 27.1km long route. More than 2200 trees have already been felled for the widening of key roads. It is sad and more than tragic.

On comparison, the government of Punjab should learn a thing or two from government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KP. Billion Tree Tsunami Project is the tight slap on so called developmental projects of government of Punjab. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has made the protection and planting of trees a key part of the development and of high concerns. That’s why I and many more are lucky enough to live a life free of smog. We have got fresh air to breathe in a healthy environment for which we are very thankful to the government of KP and everyone else who were the cause of launching Billion Tree Tsunami Project.
