Immediately after the position became vacant, an Interim Leadership Council temporarily took over the duties of the Supreme Leader. This council included President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, and Guardian Council cleric Alireza Arafi. Their role was to maintain state functions until a permanent leader was chosen. 

Who Is Mojtaba Khamenei?

Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969, is the second son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A cleric holding the rank of Hojjatoleslam, he has long been considered influential behind the scenes in Iranian politics. Over the years, he reportedly built close relationships with the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and key conservative political networks. 

Although Mojtaba never held a formal high-ranking government office, analysts have often described him as a figure with significant influence inside the ruling establishment. His supporters see him as someone who can continue his father’s ideological legacy, while critics argue that his rise represents an unprecedented step toward dynastic leadership within the Islamic Republic.
